Couple film attack on Gandhi statue
A PIETERMARITZBURG couple were enraged when a man struck the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in the Church Street Mall with bottles, while pedestrians seemed to enjoy the spectacle yesterday afternoon. “People kept laughing instead of stopping him. I tried to stop him, but he ran around the statue before he pelted me with a bottle. I decided to video the act with my cellphone,” said Shanker Chaudhury. Chaudhury’s wife, who asked to remain anonymous, called the police emergency 10111 number. She said it was a long time before an operator answered and that an argument ensued. The couple said they waited a long time for the police and left before they arrived. The couple, who immigrated from India about five years ago, said the Indian spiritual and political leader is important to them, and they could not bear to see his statue being vandalised. Police spokesman Henry Budhram confirmed that a case of misconduct was reported. He said the man, whom he described as a mental patient, had left by the time the police arrived.
